The Elder Scrolls Online - War in Cyrodiil Trailer

"In our latest trailer for The Elder Scrolls Online," states the description, "witness the Alliance War in action as Tamriel's three alliances rally their forces in the heart of Cyrodiil. Are you prepared to face your enemies, conquer their fortifications, and claim the Ruby Throne?" You know what? I'm not sure that I am. Four million people are, though. That's how many applied to the beta, according to the TESO blog's

 release announcement post.

NSA and GCHQ have been surveilling World of Warcraft

Once, in my more politically active university days, I wrote "flip the flipping Prime Minister" on my MySpace page. As a result, I'm resigned to the fact that I will be ceaselessly monitored by the full force of my government's intelligence services. The less dangerously subversive among you might be somewhat more surprised to learn how far those surveillance tendrils are spreading. According to reports co-published between The GuardianThe New York Times and ProPublica, intelligence gathering has spread to online worlds, with spies having 'infiltrated' World of Warcraft and Second Life.
According to documents disclosed by Edward Snowden, both the US's NSA and the UK's GCHQ created accounts, recruited informers and gathered data in MMOs, and through the apparently more heavily monitored Xbox Live. According to a top secret document from 2008, they saw these spaces as a possible "target-rich communication network," with the potential to give terrorists and other criminal elements "a way to hide in plain sight." Presumably there were also worried about the threat of global boar genocide.
The surveillance was wide-spread enough that the agencies needed a "deconfliction" group, to ensure operatives weren't accidentally monitoring each other, and maybe to organise the intra-departmental raids. Despite all this, the documents provide no examples of any counter-terrorism successes from these actions. That either suggests that terrorists aren't using MMOs as a method of communication, or that they simply think that WoW is too full of carebears.
On Blizzard's part, a spokesperson told the NYT that they were unaware of any surveillance. "If it was, it would have been done without our knowledge or permission," they said.
It's a fascinating insight into the workings, fears and, to some degree, paranoia of these agencies. Given the abundance of communication that typifies these games and services, it's no real surprise that agencies dedicated to the analysis of data would gravitate towards them. This is a still-unfolding story that will eventually need to form part of the wider discussion about the role of counter-terrorism, and the level to which privacy should be an expectation of a democratic society. Of course, as a guy who writes about PC games, I'm going to make jokes instead.

Neverwinter's Shadowmantle Expansion now live!

What is Shadowmantle? Well sure, it's the second "module" for Neverwinter. But what is Shadowmantle. A dark corruption of the Earth's undersurface layer, ineffectually oozing its evil plans? The ominous, Sun-blocking dread of a giant flying mollusc's dorsal body wall? An unholy pollution of any of the other things listed on Wikipedia's disambiguation page? Ah, having looked at the feature list, it's the name of a boss, as well as the billowing cloak of darkness that marks them out as being Proper Evil. That makes more sense, even if I still think hovering death squid would be far scarier.
  • "Hunter Ranger playable class: This new class is deadly from afar and has incredible damage capabilities up close as well. Log in and play as one now!
  • "Hunter Ranger Booster Pack: This pack is now available for purchase in the Zen Market. Get a head start on your new Hunter Ranger!
  • "Dread Ring Campaign: Enter the Dread Ring and encounter new foes. If you survive, you'll be able to face Valindra Shadowmantle herself.
  • "Active Companion Bonus System: Each active companion will grant bonuses for your character giving you an extra edge in combat!
  • "Collections System: Track all of your existing loot and hunt for new loot, including missing set items, with this system.
  • "New Paragon Paths for existing classes: New skills are now available for existing classes! Which path will you choose?
  • "Artifacts System: This new item type is now added to Neverwinter. These items will become permanent fixtures for your character, and will be able to level up and get more powerful as you advance.
  • "Sword Coast Adventures (coming very soon!): Send companions out to complete tasks to earn rewards and gain companion experience, all through the Neverwinter Gateway!
  • "Item Progression System: Read more about changes and improvements to the fusing system in Neverwinter."
The expansion is now live for the free-to-play MMORPG, which is itself now available on Steam. Also on Steam is an exclusive Starter Pack, which comes with a variety of boosts and consumables, and a magic panther.

WildStar trailer introduces Medic and Engineer Classes

Finally, after weeks of teasers, Carbine Studios have rounded up the full gang. We've got the damage-dealing Warrior, the damage-dealing Esper, the damage-dealing... well, you get the idea. Also, for the first time, we get to see the two formally unannounced (which is to say: announced) classes: the Medic and Engineer. Any guesses as to whether they're going to deal damage?
That'll be a yes then.
While the Engineer is yet to be fleshed out, the Medic is the subject of the latest DevSpeak video.

So while we're still waiting on details of exactly how the Engineer will play - an especially intriguing prospect given just how much the Medic already focuses on deployables - we at least know the full selection of potential play styles when the game is released.

Guild Wars 2 Fractured update arrives today

Guild Wars 2 fans benefit from a stack of new content today with the arrival of the Fractured update, which includes time travel and challenges for the most daring of combatants.
The update’s name, Fractured, refers to the fact that it brings with it a new fractal enabling players to explore events from the past. Thanks to the research efforts of Ellen Kiel, you’ll be able to pass through the mists to the Thaumanova Reactor meltdown.
There are a further two fractals and two boss fractals, as well, and the battle in the Tower of Nightmare is ongoing, with new Fractal rewards on offer. ArenaNet has also added leaderboards for Fractals events.
There’s a trailer below and full details on the update page.
